Dear Impact Assessment Agency Members:

Re: Proper Decommissioning of the Gentilly-1 Nuclear Power Plant, Ref No. 90092

As the first ever decommissioning of a nuclear power plant in Canada, this project deserves the highest level of scrutiny possible. It is impossible to predict accurately and prepare for the many aspects of decommissioning a nuclear power facility in Canada, each with its unique geographic context, construction, history of operations,  accidents, emissions, content and volume of wastes, transportation, roads, communities en route to destination, etc.  To provide the best opportunity for all parties to deal successfully with all expected and unexpected complications, the Port Hope Community Health Concerns Committee (PHCHCC) joins with other concerned organizations and citizens in calling for the following:

1. A Review Panel for the "Decommissioning of the Gentilly-1 Waste Facility Project, Reference Number 90092.

2.  The immediate release of the environmental effects report "Environmental Effects Review for Gentilly-1 Waste Facility - Phase 3 Decommissioning"

3. Impacts of transport and disposal of the waste to be included in the assessment, including by consulting First Nations and communities along the route of radioactive wastes from the plant, and by consulting First Nations on whose traditional territory the hazardous waste would be stored.

Thank you for considering our concerns and recommendations.

Faye More, Chair, PHCHCC
