The Port Hope Community Health Concerns Committee is very pleased to welcome back long-time friend of Port Hope Dr. Gordon Edwards, Ph.D (Physics, Math) President of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility ccnr.org. Dr. Edwards has made many visits to Port Hope over the years, conducted research on Cameco’s nuclear operations here and will be presenting with our Committee at the upcoming Cameco 20 year re-licensing hearing of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in Port Hope on November 2-4th at the Port Hope Recreation Centre. The interventions to the CNSC hearing are available on our websites as well as CNSC

Dr. Edwards is a retired professor of mathematics and science at Vanier College in Montreal and has served as a consultant on nuclear issues for governmental and non-governmental bodies for over 45 years. He has been accepted as an expert witness by US and Canadian courts and tribunals, has cross-examined nuclear experts during provincial Commissions of Inquiry and frequently testifies before provincial and federal bodies such as the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission which he has done previously with our Committee and will do again next month in Port Hope.

Please join us for an important, informative presentation and discussion with Dr. Edwards           on October 21, 2026, 6:30 - 9:00 pm at the Port Hope Lions Centre, 29 Thomas Street, Port Hope.

Our Committee

●      The volunteer PHCHCC was formed in 1995 as an incorporated non-profit organization of current and former residents concerned about potential health and environmental impacts from living with the operations of two CNSC licensed Cameco nuclear industries and more than 2 million cubic metres of radioactive wastes now undergoing a federal $2.6 billion remediation in more than 1200 locations.

●      In January 2025, the Ontario government announced plans through OPG to build the largest nuclear plant in the world in Port Hope’s rural, farming area of Wesleyville on the shores of Lake Ontario. We strongly oppose this proposal for reasons of environmental injustice, the significant, irrevocable impacts on air, water, vegetation, soil, farmland, natural areas, wildlife, culture, quality of life, adding risks to our health, safety and security now and for future generations.

●      In June 2026 we submitted a Petition to the Auditor General of Canada detailing requests including: our rights to environmental justice under Bill c-226 (2024) to refuse provincial and OPG’s nuclear plans, the need for an independent audit of the $2.6 billion federal AECL/CNL remediation underway, for ongoing health monitoring and long overdue Canadian legislation, similar to US legislation (RECA and EEOICPA) that acknowledges harm to workers and communities from nuclear industry operations and has paid compensation of $36 billion to eligible applicants. We look forward to the responses from the AG of Canada and responsible federal Ministers. www.porthopehealthconcerns.com
