To Mayor and Council,
I am emailing to voice my concerns over the proposed Nuclear Facility at Wesleyville. To have the largest Nuclear Facility in the world in a rural setting on the lakefront once again is unbelievable to comprehend. This facility would be surrounded by prime agricultural land and not suited for this type of facility, in addition to making significant changes to a historic road, such as Lakeshore Road. This would be in close proximity to residents and the historic village of Wesleyville, as well as a health and safety issue to the people.
We have a legacy of waste that is currently being remediated by PHAI. This has been a nightmare in and of itself; lack of communication, and lack of transparency to the residents most impacted by the cleanup. These are common complaints held by many residents in the municipality.
Have we learned nothing after years of living and dealing with the waste from the two nuclear plants in Port Hope? This isn’t just about the waste, it’s about the continuing emissions coming from these plants into the air, soil, and our beautiful Lake Ontario.
As Mayor and Council, you have a duty of care to the residents of this municipality. You must be impartial and listen to all sides before making major decisions such as the Wesleyville proposal.
It was unfortunate that not one of you attended the public meeting held last Wednesday night by the Port Hope and Community Health Concerns Committee. It was an informative and well-attended meeting. As elected officials, you should represent all residents of the municipality. You may not always agree on the topic, but you must take the time to be informed on all sides of an issue.
The next meeting of the Port Hope and Community Health Concerns Committee will take place on Wednesday, November 26th, at the Canton Hub.
Regards, Lori Andrus
