Citizens ask Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to act
Lake Ontario Waterkeeper is appealing to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to help protect Ontarians from the potential impacts of a new nuclear fuel.

Waterkeeper is concerned about the Cameco Corporation’s plans to make, transport, burn, and bury enriched uranium throughout Ontario.

Waterkeeper, supported by nonprofit organizations from Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, and Lake Ontario, submitted a formal request that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission call for a review panel on the project.

Groups are worried that the Cameco Corporation may get the go-ahead for its enriched uranium program without ever submitting to an independent hearing on the potential environmental and health impacts.

Waterkeeper submitted affidavit evidence to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission detailing the level of public concern about the impacts of the Cameco Corporation’s operations on local communities.

In every community represented, air, water, and soil quality has been degraded by nuclear-industry related operations in the last generation.

Waterkeeper is scheduled to appear before the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Thursday, May 19, 2005 around 9:30 am. The hearing begins at 8:30 on the 14th Floor of 280 Slater Street, Ottawa, Ontario.
