Environmental
issues take the spotlight as renown scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster
Dr. David Suzuki takes centre stage at Port Hope High School.
On April 4 at 7 p.m. Dr. Suzuki will offer his advice to the community,
currently in the midst of a heated debate over Cameco Corporation's proposal
to produce slightly enriched uranium (SEU) at its Port Hope facility,
says Port Hope Nuclear Environmental Watchdogs( PHNEW) chairman, Chris
Conti. There is no admission charge for the event.
Regarded as one of Canada's most respected environmental advocates, Mr.
Conti says Dr. Suzuki agreed to come to town at the invitation of longtime
Port Hope resident Pat Lawson and the Port Hope Nuclear Environmental
Watchdogs.
"We are very honoured Dr. Suzuki has agreed to come and speak in
Port Hope," he says. "It's really a credit to Pat Lawson and
her years of dedication to the environment that he responded so quickly
and in a positive manner to her invitation," says Mr. Conti.
Dr. Suzuki last spoke in Port Hope in 1995 at the height of the controversial
proposal to store radioactive waste in caverns under Lake Ontario, he
adds. Over 1,000 people showed up and shortly after his appearance, the
caverns plan was abandoned.
PHNEW has a number of concerns about the SEU proposal including the safety
of the process, locating the process in Port Hope, lack of a buffer zone
and proximity to Lake Ontario, says the chairman. The format for the evening
is as follows - Dr. Suzuki will make his presentation then field questions
from the floor. After the question and answer period, the guest speaker
will sign books for audience members.
