Northumberland Today Online - March 29/2005

Transcriptions of every word spoken on the record during the Feb. 23 mid-term license reviews for Zircatec Precision Industries and Cameco Corporation can be downloaded from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission web site.

The hearings, which combined ran from 8:30 a.m. Feb. 23 until 1:03 a.m. Feb. 24 have been turned into two separate documents. Words spoken by interveners, CNSC members and staff have all been documented into the documents. As a result, the public can read the 293 pages of transcribed dialogue from the Zircatec hearing and 388 pages from the Cameco hearing.

To access the notes, visit www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca. On the left hand side of the page the heading commission hearings and meetings will appear. Click on that heading. After clicking, look on the left hand side of the resulting page for the commission documentation heading. This will take you to another page. Down the middle of the page there is a list of dates. Click on February 23. Upon clicking on that date, a number of options will appear on the next page. Near the bottom of the page on the right hand side is the subheading Transcript(s). Zircatec and Cameco transcriptions can be downloaded via separate links. Transcriptions are downloaded in the form of PDF files. The interventions were made to CNSC members, including the president, CNSC spokesperson Aurele Gervais said in February.

The purpose of mid-term hearings is to ensure companies are living up to the conditions of their license. It is up to the CNSC members to decide if conditions are being met. A record of the proceedings will be released about six weeks later, Mr. Gervais said. Major decisions do not usually result from the hearings. April 6 comes exactly six weeks after the hearings. There is no indication on the CNSC web site when the record of proceedings will be released.
