Questions Provided by The Port Hope Community Health Concerns Committee
to The Low Level Radioactive Waste Management Office

for Discussion at a Public Meeting Scheduled for June 21, 2007

1. Health
Since there are expected increases in particulates in our air during cleanup, how will these risks be monitored, publicly reported and minimized?
How have the abundances predicted been calculated?
Is there a public alert strategy for serious risks to air, soil or water?
How will we know if the cleanup process has adverse effects on people?
Why are all the people who have lived in contaminated properties not being notified, and part of a health study with long-term health monitoring?
What follow-up monitoring will occur of the people and environment?
Why hasn’t Dr. Power’s School had sub-slab testing for source material and 24/7 radon monitoring since elevated radon was discovered in and beneath the school 30 years ago?
Why is the nuclear risk allowed by the Federal Government so much greater than that of the chemical risk?
Why does uranium take precedence over all other dangerous chemicals in Port Hope?
Should home owners get a second opinion in regards to the readings of their property?
How can they trust agencies that won't disclose all information in the first place?

2. Transportation
What are the proposed truck routes and why were they selected?
How many trucks per day will enter and leave the dump site and what will be the hours of trucking?
Will there be portable stations to weigh and inspect the trucks?
How will spread of contamination via trucks be managed?

3. Re-survey and Clean-up Criteria
How many public and private properties are known now to be contaminated?
After cleanup is completed, how will the level of uranium in Port Hope’s soil and radon in homes compare with the provincial averages?
How extensive is the re-survey of Ward 1 and what is the criteria for determining the extent of investigation and for cleanup?
Why is there no similar survey of Ward 2 planned since contamination has been found there?
Does the agreement with town council for the Construction Monitoring Program adequately meet the needs of residents who have marginally contaminated property and have to pay their own cleanup?
Will these sites be included in the cleanup?

4. Site Remediation
Will residents of the community be told of all locations to be remediated and the schedules so they can make alternate plans?
What are the site containment strategies for day, night and adverse weather conditions which could impact dust, runoff, etc.?
Is there contingency plan in the event of accidents happening?
How will the noise be managed during cleanup?
What exactly will happen to a street that needs to be remediated? How much will be excavated and over what period of time?
How will property owners be protected from contaminants during remediation of their properties and those nearby?
Do property owners have to disclose information about contamination to staff or visitors? If not, why not?
Can a property owner refuse a survey or remediation?
Will council and citizens have a say in how individual sites are cleanup up?

5. Storage Site
How can the proposed site accommodate the possible volume of wastes?
Will Port Hope be assured that all of the wastes are cleaned up?
Will Port Hope be asked to take waste from other locations in the future?
What monitoring will be done in the future?

6. Property Value Protection Program
Do all property owners know if they are on the current list of clean up sites?
How many sites have currently been identified in Ward 1 and Ward 2?
What circumstances are eligible for compensation?
How many payments have been made from this program since it began and for what reasons? How many applications have been denied and why?
Will this program pay for people to re-locate temporarily during clean-up?
Will this program compensate businesses which are affected during cleanup?

Questions for Town Council
Is Council fighting for disclosure of contaminated sites, for community health studies and for more compensation?
Is Council doing due diligence with zoning?
Does Council have full access to public property files and all data collected?
Will the town and citizens have a say in how sites will be remediated on a site by site basis?

Concerns Expressed at the Public Meeting with the Low Level Radioactive Waste Management Office in Order Recorded – June 21, 2007
Containment: will there be real time monitoring for radon gas?
If the levels are too high how long will it be before shut down?
What is the action plan if an accident happens?
Why can’t property owners see everything in their property file at the LLRWMO and make copies if they choose?
Why can’t they have third parties view their files with permission?
Why aren’t all the locations of contaminated sites being made public?
Where are the un-licensed sites that CNSC has been exempting from licenses since 2001?
Will we know all sites after the re-survey is done?
Will there be any alerts to people who have health conditions to warn them of increased dust and risk?
What other projects of equal size are being modeled for Port Hope’s cleanup?
Given the many years Eldorado and Cameco have worked with depleted uranium has testing for uranium 236 in the soils and wastes been done?
Would it make a difference to the cleanup if it is found?
If I live next door to a site being cleaned and I have concerns, who do I call?
Is there a program to relocate people, temporarily and/or permanently if they wish?
Will tourists be informed of the locations being remediated?
Why isn’t there a municipal by-law governing disclosure of information when properties are sold?
How is control over air particulate going to be managed?
If there is no health hazard, why is all this money being spent to clean it up?
Would the federal government test the birds that live near the Cameco stacks?
Why hasn’t one cent been spent to monitor people’s actual health?
How can potential harm really be predicted?
Why does the dirt on Roseglen Road have plastic and weights on it?
Why hasn’t Dr. Power’s Elementary School been remediated when the sub-slab bore hole results were known in 1978 that showed radon beneath the kindergarten and gym?
Why hasn’t there been continuous monitoring 24/7 since then to avert a tragedy?
Why isn’t there a survey planned for contamination in Ward 2?
